Welcome to The Art Gallery
Falmouth Art Gallery would like to invite you to take part in our exciting new project for reception classes. We believe in access to art for all and want to share our fantastic building and art collection with you!
‘Welcome to The Art Gallery’ will give children the opportunity to visit Falmouth Art Gallery, make their own artwork and learn all about what an art gallery is and what happens there.
Project outline
Your class will have three workshop sessions; two will be outreach in your classroom or school hall, one will be at Falmouth Art Gallery.
Ideally, these sessions will take place within a short time frame, over 3-6 weeks, in order to keep momentum whilst allowing for reflection.
Sessions will connect with the EYFS statuary framework including:
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
The children will be able to share their thoughts and ideas about the artworks through questioning and discussion.
Physical Development
Fine motor control and precision through the use of various art and craft techniques and materials, including drawing, collage, pastels, tearing and scissor cutting.
Literacy
Each session will include a rhyme, poem, song or story relating to the artwork.
Mathematics
We will look for shape, pattern and repetition in the artwork. Plus, we will play some fun counting games!
Understanding the World
The children will see a wide range of different art styles including drawing, painting, photography and printmaking.
During the visit to the art gallery they will learn about a different type of building, how it works and what it is for.
Expressive Arts
This is where we shine! Combining the above elements, the sessions will give opportunity for children to communicate their thoughts, ideas and feelings through speaking and listening, making and movement.
Content of sessions
Session 1
We will come to your school, bringing art materials and copies of artworks.
The focus will be on learning about what an art gallery is and what it is for. The children will learn about Falmouth Art Gallery; where it is situated in town, what is inside and what happens there. They will learn about the word ‘exhibition’. We will look at a range of different images and discuss the content and preferences through open questioning. The children will make a piece of artwork in response to something they have seen.
We will end the session with a rhyme, song or story and a little intro about the next session.
Session 2
You will visit Falmouth Art Gallery.
Your class will experience the building, with its big rooms and not much furniture, and learn how to move around the gallery in order to keep the artworks and themselves safe. We will recap on what we did in session 1. There will be opportunity to freely explore the gallery in small groups, enjoying the surroundings whilst seeing the exhibitions. An art activity will take place in the gallery, or the chamber room, which is situated on the same floor.
We will end the session with a rhyme, song or story and a little intro about the next session.
Session 3
We will come to your school, bringing art materials and copies of artworks.
We will recap on what we did in session 2 and find out about what the children remember from their visit to the art gallery.
This session will have the familiar components of looking, listening, discussion, making and doing, but you are invited to choose the theme.
This could link with your current topic, something seasonal, or a storybook you are reading with your class. As long as there is artwork in our collection to support your topic we can create a session for you.
Some broad suggestions are: Colour and Shape, Sea, Falmouth, Faces, Trees, Flowers, Weather
We will end the session with a rhyme, song or story and recap of all we have done, learned and enjoyed!
We are really excited to be able to do these sessions and to have you join us!
