All Falmouth Residents Invited to a Community Skate Fete to Mark Official Opening of Falmouth Skatepark
The Falmouth Skatepark Project and Falmouth Town Council are pleased to announce the official opening of Falmouth’s new skatepark at Dracaena playing fields. To celebrate the addition of this already popular and much-used amenity to Falmouth, a community Skate Fete will be held on Saturday, 7th September 2024, from midday to 6pm.
This all-inclusive family afternoon will feature an exciting lineup of activities designed to entertain and engage all ages. Skate, Scooter, and BMX Jams will offer all wheeled sports enthusiasts the opportunity to showcase their talents and burgeoning skills whilst live music performances and the Noise Pollution Soundsystem will keep the energy high throughout the day.
Attendees can look forward to enjoying delicious and affordable food, treats and refreshments. Families will enjoy the circus school, which will feature entertaining performances and interactive workshops for children. Relaxing chillout zones will offer a space to unwind and socialise, while the climbing wall and bouncy castle will provide fun and active options for kids and adults alike. Additionally, there will be engaging arts and crafts sessions led by Falmouth Art Gallery, where attendees can explore their creativity, and a range of sports activities provided by the Dracaena Centre.
Adding to the vibrant atmosphere, Source FM, Falmouth’s local radio station, will also be broadcasting live from the event.
Getting to the event: Visitors are encouraged to walk, scoot, or skate to the skatepark. No parking will be available at Dracaena Playing Fields or on Dracaena Avenue on the day. For those who cannot use alternative transportation, free parking will be available at the nearby Park and Float carpark at Ponsharden, a short walk from the Dracaena Playing Fields. Those with accessibility needs should contact Hayley Nicholson at Falmouth Town Council in advance on 01326 313553 or email: hayley@falmouth.co.uk
The Falmouth Skatepark Project has a rich history rooted in community passion and dedication. The journey began over 15 years ago, when a group of local skateboarding enthusiasts and concerned residents recognized the need for a dedicated space for wheeled sports in Falmouth. What started as a grassroots initiative grew into a community project, driven by countless hours of planning, fundraising, and advocacy.
The project received crucial support and funding from a variety of sources. Falmouth Town Council provided funding and support, recognising the importance of the skatepark as a valuable recreational asset for the town. A generous local response to an official Crowdfunder, as well as donations from local businesses and organisations also played a pivotal role, including contributions from Sessions Surf & Skate Shop, Falmouth and Penryn Lions Club, and Cornish Holiday Cottages. The project was further empowered by a transformative grant of £145,000 from The National Lottery Community Fund, which was instrumental in making the skatepark a reality.
The Falmouth Skatepark Project Committee, comprised of dedicated community volunteers, has worked hard to make the Falmouth Skatepark a reality. Their unwavering commitment has culminated in the creation of a state-of-the-art facility that will serve the town for years to come and is already proving to be immensely popular with the young, and young at heart, of Falmouth.
Alex Brinnen from the Falmouth Skatepark Project Committee:
“Some of us have spent 1/3rd of our lives on this project so we are really looking forward to celebrating the opening of the park with the community and hope that everyone that has been involved past and present can come down and celebrate with us. We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved and hope that this will be the first of many events held at the skatepark.”
All residents are invited to join the Skate Fete celebration on 7th September for a day of fun and community spirit.
